Verdict

DEACON BLUES has made up into the sprinter that he threatened to be last season and made it five wins on the bounce for the campaign in winning his first start at this level. This may have been a Group Two but it's been proved time and again that there's very little between the top sprinters and he can expect to be running in Group Ones next season. As is often the case, the draw had an impact on the result with one or two hard luck stories against the rails and those towards the middle of the track struggling to get involved but you can only play the hand you're dealt and James Fanshawe's gelding ran out a very easy winner. He got a lovely tow through the race from the speedy Hooray and was well positioned to manoeuvre around her when she weakened and the result was never in doubt. There haven't been many top-class sprinters to have emerged from France in recent years but Wizz Kid certainly promises to make the break through, following up fine runs in the Nunthorpe and Abbaye with another good performance back over this longer trip. This was only the eighth start of her career so it's reasonable to think that she can find further improvement next season although her running style means that she will always need a little luck. Libranno is a tough sort who was having his tenth run of a season in which he has bagged a couple of seven furlong Group Threes and finished fourth in the July Cup. He doesn't look good enough to win over this trip in this company but bounced right back to his best after a rare below par run and is a credit to connections. He just edged out Royal Rock who had landed a second Bengough Stakes to his tally over C&D earlier in the month; the seven year old retains all of his enthusiasm and ran right up to his best. Moonlight Cloud had brilliantly brushed aside the opposition in the Maurice de Gheest over an extended six furlongs last time and was widely expected to run a big race. Thierry Jarnet forfeited a prominent pitch in order to be able to edge over towards the rails but then found himself continually hampered by the weakening Hooray and Night Carnation. She didn't get out until the final furlong and then stayed on well to pass Night Carnation without finishing off well enough to suggest that she'd have gone close and it may be that connections will opt to step her back up to seven furlongs or a mile next season. Night Carnation got this sixth furlong well having done her racing this season over five and finished a little further behind the winner than she had done at Newbury suggesting that she very much ran to form. Society Rock had a Listed win and first and second placed finishes in the Golden Jubilee to his name from three previous runs over C&D so could confidently have been expected to go close. He didn't exactly enjoy the run of the race but was never travelling with his usual zest and may have had enough for the season.
