Verdict

A newcomers maiden where the market principals came to the fore. Brian Meehan's youngsters usually improve considerably for a run but the betting strongly suggested that a big run was expected from Most Improved whose entries in the Royal Lodge and Dewhurst suggest that he'd been showing up well at home. He was awkward leaving the gates but settled well enough once getting cover and travelled powerfully when manoeuvred out to join the front rank. The Lawman colt quickened well enough when asked but proved very green inside the final furlong, running around when out on his own in front. Once joined by KINGLET, however, he straightened out and quickened again to match strides with the winner; he fared best of those to race prominently and could well be above average. The winner raced in rear for much of the contest before being brought towards the stands' side of the group which raced down the centre of the track. This Derby entry also showed signs of inexperience, carrying his head to one side and wandering around the track but he did everything very easily and looks a useful performer in the making. Big Johnny D is related to a mile winner at two but has a middle distance pedigree and should come into his own next season. He was readily outpaced by the first two in the final 50 yards but should come on for this run and a longer trip. Cryptic Choice was slightly hampered by the winner hanging across him well inside the final furlong but picked up well afterwards to take third. His dam was a triple winner in the States and this 45,000 guineas purchase holds an entry in next month's sales race at Doncaster - a meeting his trainer targets - and it's not difficult to envisage him running a big race there. He just edged out Haymarket who attracted support in the market ahead of his debut; a half-brother to three winners, he kept on well for pressure and should have little difficulty picking up an average maiden. There was a gap back to Juvenal for whom the penny only dropped late on; a step up in trip is likely to suit. Wrotham Heath is a late foal out of a middle distance Listed winner and his run was not without promise even if failing to live up to market expectations. He saw plenty of daylight on the far side of the pack but was only left behind inside the final furlong; he can do better in time although his Dewhurst entry looks ambitious on this evidence. Wayne Manor has no big race entries but was another to shape encouragingly and he could make up into a useful middle distance performer next year.
