Verdict

STRONG SUIT produced a highly competent performance that owed plenty to Richard Hughes positioning throughout the race.

The race was not staged at the quickest of tempos as Libranno predictably strode out early with Red Jazz, who assumed the rail.

Strong Suit was kept just a stride off the leaders and the eye was drawn to exactly how well he was travelling throughout. Asked to go on with his effort inside the final furlong, he soon had the measure of his rivals and it will be interesting to see whether connections stick at this seven or look to going back up to a mile.

Red Jazz did enough to hold off Beacon Lodge for second. Clive Cox's charge had to negotiate his passage from right at the back of the pack and under the circumstances and given his preference for a softer surface, this was not an effort without merit.

Doncaster Rover could never overcome a wide draw and was always struggling to hold a position. Majestic Myles was found out at this level once again. Balthazaar's Gift started awkwardly and may have needed this race.

Dalghar was very reluctant to post and though he travelled a little more kindly than he did at Newmarket - this was another below par performance and he looks to be one to have severe reservations about until showing something otherwise.

Connections had blamed the draw for Delegator's eclipse in the July Cup. He was always toward the rear in this contest and while making some headway inside the final couple of furlongs - he was ultimately eased by Frankie Dettori when defeat became obvious and he now has to prove that his York effort was no flash in the pan.
