Verdict

A typically competitive finale but won in quite decisive style in the end by MANASSAS. He raced in the stands side group and was one of the last to come off the bridle, with his jockey actually lowering his goggles as the wheat was sorted from the chaff with two furlongs left to run. Having raced prominently he moved in the slipstream of the front-running Courageous and struck out on his own as he chased down leader Striking Spirit who was racing away from him in the centre. He quickly put a length between him and the rest and although they were nipping at his heels in the final 50 yards, he never looked like getting chased down. He'll go up the customary 5 or 7lbs for this win which will put him probably into no-man's land, however connections probably won't mind after this win. Runner-up Excellent Guest came from a similar position to the winner and he ran well, just taking a little longer to hit top stride. He was closing at the line and put up a career best, with a fondness for the track obviously something he shares with the third Striking Spirit. On just his second start for Tim Easterby he ran a blinder, doing by far the best of those who raced in the group who raced down the middle. The centre group was led for a long way by Advanced, with Below Zero and Free For All close to the pace, but none could keep tabs on Striking Spirit who burst three lengths clear two furlongs out. Whether it was racing on his own or his stamina running out is not certain, but he started to fade in the final 200 yards. This was a top effort though and he'll be a force in the big six furlong sprints later in the year, with Ripon and Ayr probably on the agenda. They may also be targets for fifth sixth home Courageous who showed up all the way on the stands side and is a dangerously well-handicapped horse, whilst fourth and fifth home Decent Fella and Docofthebay also ran very well. They both drifted towards the centre of the track having raced on the near side, with Decent Fella travelling very strongly for a long way but just not able to match the kick of the first few home. Smarty Socks came next despite the recent rain being against him, and he's still progressive, whilst the last of the group to finish clear was Our Jonathan who just seemed to tie up in the final furlong having held every chance with two furlongs to run. Freeforaday caught the eye running on late in the day, ahead of Across The Rhine who did fairly well dropping into handicap grade.
