Verdict

A quickfire double for James Fanshawe, as DEACON BLUES really stuck his head out to fend off Waffle in a driving finish. Unsurprisingly the field split into two distinct groups, with the majority of the runners heading to the far side. That group was led by the pacy Swiss Cross, with Hoof It and Burning Thread also helping to cut out the running, but the two groups looked pretty level with two furlongs left to run. However from that point it was those on the far side who started to dominate, with the winner still covered up in midfield. Eventually Johnny Murtagh, so good in these big races, moved his horse closer to the pace and he burst to the front with over a furlong to run. He got away from most of the field but Waffle came after him and really chased him hard to the line, making him pull out all of the stops. Eventually the winning margin was a neck, and to the winner's credit he looked like maintaining that gap had they raced for another furlong. He'll go up at least 7lbs for this, putting him on a mark of 105, and that might just put him in the twilight zone. However he is only four, and with the promise of more to come, he can make his mark in Pattern company before too long. The runner-up is a model of consistency and he ran an excellent race. He travelled well off the pace and just had to delay his challenge slightly, it wasn't the difference between winning and losing but it warrants a mention. Third, and running a great race, was Pastoral Player. He will have found this ground slow enough and he had to come from a long way back as this is how he has been seen to best effect in the past. He had to navigate around runners on the far side for a clear run and by the time he got into full stride the first two had gone. He's very progressive however and looks a Group horse in the making. The fourth Anne Of Kiev is in the form of her life, and like the first three, she benefitted from a typically strong gallop. Her mark is high enough but she's still in great form. Gramercy ran a blinder in fifth, considering it was his first run of the year and he was unproven on the ground, whilst Fathsta has no secrets from the handicapper but is a solid yardstick for the form. Hoof It disappointed, however his early prominent position was not the place to be in hindsight, whilst Mac's Power ran very well, taking first in his group on the stand's side. Nasri and Evens And Odds shaped well enough in that group to suggest they're not done with in regards to handicap marks, whilst Golden Desert caught the eye staying on once the race was over. The disappointment of the race was Victoire De Lyphar. He was under pressure a long long way from home and was eventually tailed off. This was not his true form, however his two efforts this season must be a worry to connections.
