A very satisfactory return to action for last year's Investec Derby and Arc hero WORKFORCE. Poet raced in a clear lead throughout but the winner was always travelling strongly for Ryan Moore. Crucially the leader began to lug to his right over a furlong out and Ryan Moore switched Workforce to the rail. He only needed one slap of the whip to assert and score win with authority despite his seven-pound penalty. He looked a picture beforehand, has filled out from last year, and clearly his sights will now be raised. It's good to have him backc. Poet seemed to be going a stride too fast through the early stages but this clearly wasn't the case and he was able to post a career best. The cut in the ground was very much in his favour. Jan Vermeer was held up in last and plugged on to take third, well adrift of the principals. He raced as though very much in need of a step up to a mile-and-a-half and a number of Aidan O'Brien's horses have made a significant step forward from their reappearance this season. The rest finished in a bunch. Cavalryman was never particularly travelling with any fluency, Afsare was never a factor and Elusive Pimpernel disappointed. Ten furlongs with give in the ground were expected to be his optimum conditions but having tracked the winner for much of the race, he proved very one-paced down the centre of the track through the final quarter of a mile.
