Verdict

A pleasing enough performance from AWAIT THE DAWN, although in beating a soft ground lover and a (so far) progressive handicapper, his task was probably not herculean. He was quickly into stride and was soon in a prominent position chasing the front-running Distant Memories. With the field well strung out, and a solid pace, he moved through on the bridle to challenge for the lead on the (final) swing towards home. Pushed out by jockey Ryan Moore, he soon mastered the runner-up and once into a balanced stride in the final 1000 yards he really began to motor away. As mentioned this wasn't a stellar field, but he won it nicely and looks sure to progress through the season, with a step up in trip likely to pose no problem at all. Connections suggested a trip to Royal Ascot next, for either the Hardwicke Stakes or the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. Tom Tate's runner-up was not a certain runner due to the ground but he ran well from the front, especially as they didn't dawdle. He battled hard to hold second place late in the day and is sure to win at Group level this season when tackling soft ground. Third home was Forte Dei Marmi who didn't help his chance by racing keenly after missing the break. However he started to make ground on the leaders before the turn for home and stayed on nicely. It's unlikely that this track would have been ideal but this was a much more promising run than his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket. Critical Moment had been well-held on his sole previous run at the track, and although he fared better today, this was still not a strong effort. The trip looks to stretch him, and it should also be noted that his Goodwood win last year came when he was gifted an easy lead. Last home was Dream Eater who missed the break completely and had no chance after; this wasn't a normal feature of his racing so the run is best ignored.
