Verdict

A real turn-up with the long odds-on Magic City turned over by MISS WORK OF ART. Richard Hannon had won this race with Zebedee 12 months ago and Magic City was a warm order to follow up his most impressive success at Newbury where he had raced down the middle of the track which did appear to be the place to be that day. Paddock judges did report that he would come on again for the run but he had no obvious excuses, having jumped and travelled well with Richard Hughes soon bagging the stands side rail. He was still a little green but did quicken for pressure to pull clear of the third and just had no answer to the filly to whom he was conceding 5lbs. Richard Hannon Junior said that they would look to avoid the winner with the National Stakes and the Norfolk now the plan. Miss Work Of Art had come from a long way back to win a Lingfield maiden in the style of a filly who will stay further. Paul Hanagan was niggling along to keep her up with the pace almost from the moment the stalls opened and she looked to be in trouble at the halfway stage with her pilot getting more serious but, once again, she picked up in really good fashion approaching the two pole and won going away; she looks a smart juvenile who will definitely stay further. Royal Ascot must come under consideration whilst later in the season connections must be tempted by the big pot on offer for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury in July given that she cost only 29,000 guineas and would thus be attractively weighted although a Listed race at York is reportedly next on the agenda. Dawn Lightning was not disgraced and nor was the already gelded Ewell Place who had got loose beforehand and will improve for the experience on ground that may have been quick enough.
