Verdict

Hooray and Elshabakiya ensured this was run at a strong pace which helped to play into the hands of the stoutly bred BLUE BUNTING who had long been regarded by her connections as an Oaks filly. A dual winner over a mile as a juvenile having chased home the smart Theyskens Theory on debut, the Dynaformer filly was doing all of her best work in the closing stages and was promoted to favouritism for the Epsom Classic as a result as she bids to emulate Kazzia who completed the double for the same owners. She came under pressure at around the two pole and still had around five lengths to find at the furlong marker but fairly flew up the hill to win going away. She won her final start of the season on good to soft ground so is versatile with regard underfoot conditions and this stoutly bred filly will have no problem staying further. Together had disappointed in a strong sales race over ten furlongs on her return but bounced right back to form over this shorter trip and always looked to be holding Maqaasid in the centre of the field and she could return to Ascot (where she has run well in the past) for the Coronation Stakes. Maqaasid had flattened out in the Nell Gwyn having travelled well but was said to be short of a run that day and connections had used the race to teach her to settle in order to help her see out a mile. She made smooth progress from the rear of the field and ran a fine race over a stiff mile that probably just stretches her; Richard Hills felt that she would be better over a round mile and mentioned the Coronation Stakes as her next target. Nova Hawk had little experience of racing over a straight mile and had raced almost exclusively on a soft surface but handled the quicker conditions well and this run must put her up with the best of her sex in France. Barefoot Lady, winner of the Nell Gwyn, was a shade unlucky not to have finished closer as she had to be switched when making her challenge. She was proven on the conditions and had racefitness on her side but emerges with plenty of credit and can certainly win a Group Two on this evidence. She edged past Havant in the closing stages and this was not a bad run from Sir Michael Stoute's filly for whom there had been concerns about the ground given her round action. She is stoutly bred and can improve for a softer surface over a longer trip and certainly shouldn't be ruled out of the Oaks picture just yet. Hopes had been high for Moonlight Cloud but she soon looked in trouble having got to the front at about the two furlong pole and was readily left behind; her rider reported that she had lost the race at the start having been left in the stalls for five minutes. I Love Me travelled well but couldn't pick up and may need a drop in class and softer ground whilst Cape Dollar can also be expected to be dropped in grade. Misty For Me was the most fancied of the O'Brien runners but was back-pedalling with two and a half to run and this was disappointing but she made good progress last season and it would be no surprise to see her connections bring her back to that level. The jockeys of Make A Dance and Empowering reported that their mounts had failed to handle the ground and undulations respectively whilst Memory practically refused to race and connections now have a job on their hands to sweeten up this undoubtedly talented filly.
