A taking performance from a very well-backed newcomer. Racing in the colours of former trainer David Barker, MAGIC CITY attracted plenty of support ahead of this debut and won decisively. He was very quickly into stride, and allowed by Richard Hughes to really find his full stride from an early stage. Hughes had the colt in the front rank throughout and he kicked for home around two furlongs from home. His mount sprinted clear, but then started to hand badly to his left. However his jockey straightened him up (without the whip) and although he then started to hang to his right, the race was already his. He looks an obvious Coventry candidate on this showing and although it's impossible to say what he beat, he certainly did the job in style. Second home was Signifer who was another to race up with the pace. He travelled kindly but just couldn't match the burst of speed shown by the winner two out. He ran on quite well and was closing at the line and this was a very promising debut. His dam ran over six furlongs and that's probably where his future lies. The well-backed Commissar was in third, and he looked to know his job from the gates. However he was trapped a bit wide and ran green. Once he got the hang of things however he ran on well (a couple of cracks of the whip seemed to help) and he was doing some sterling work in the final 100 yards. His yard is in great form, especially with their juveniles, and this son of Soviet Star should pick up a maiden wherever he heads next. Shaping with promise in fourth was Letsgoroundagain who was outpaced from an early stage. He had all bar one of his rivals in front of him two furlongs out but really found his feet in the final 200 yards to finish best of all. Although he has a five furlong winner amongst his siblings he looks more stamina laden and the obvious move would be to take him to somewhere like Windsor for a six furlong contest next; he was a real eye-catcher. There was also promise from Tioman Legend who wasn't given too hard a time in midfield before running on when getting daylight, whilst Chunky Diamond also shaped with promise before getting a bit tired late on. Stepper Point showed good natural pace on the rail and will come on for the run, whilst Arabian Falcon and Pitt Rivers should both have learnt plenty from the run; they caught the eye somewhat. Sadly Regal Entrance appeared to break down having looked ill at ease throughout.
