BAREFOOT LADY may not be the biggest but she showed plenty of heart to reel in Aidan O'Brien's first runner in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, Sing Softly. Paul Hanagan was drawn widest of all aboard the daughter of Footstepsinthesand who had been Listed and Group Three placed as a juvenile; they raced in the second half of the field in the early exchanges, tracking Sing Softly all the time. The runner-up took a length out of her just before the furlong pole when the pace quickened but she responded to Hanagan's drive and was well on top at the line. Sing Softly was encountering fast ground for the first time but she did have the benefit of two runs already this season under her belt; she has a bit of size and scope about her and lost nothing in defeat. Maqaasid (the winner of the Queen Mary) looked to be travelling best of all with two furlongs to run and it seemed to be just a question of whether she would get the gaps. She did get the breaks and may just about have got her head in front at one stage but the other pair proved much the stronger in the finish and this could be as far as she wants to go at present. Ladies Are Forever moved up menacingly with two furlongs to run but had lost her position by the furlong pole and may not have handled the undulations as she did appear to stay on again up the hill. She had travelled well but the jury remains out with regard to her stamina for this trip. Show Rainbow and Sweet Cecily had raced prominently and were not disgraced whilst Elshabakiya deserves some credit for making up ground from off the pace although she was hard ridden to do so. 2006 winner Speciosa was the last winner of this trial to go on to land the 1000 Guineas.
