Verdict

A turn-up for the books here, as there was between 2007 and 2009. SAINT ARE came out on top, having been in a fairly handy position throughout. Aikman, Fists Of Fury and Back In Focus had helped ensure a strong pace, but the winner was still going noticeably well in the front-rank when the race started to develop four hurdles from home. Along with the free-going Sparky May, the pair kicked on from the chasing pack on the final turn and they soon put distance between themselves and the rest. The winner is a big stamp of a horse, and although he was slightly clumsy at the final two flights, he was always seeing out his race with more gusto than the eventual third. He had a mark of 129 going into the race, which in itself suggests that this was a typical end of season novice race where the cream doesn't always rise to the top, but it was still a career best by some way. He will probably go chasing next season, and has the scope to do well when granted a good test of stamina. Eventually Cantlow stayed on for second; he is a big raw chasing type, and just seemed to be caught a bit flat-footed when the first pair kicked away. He's a very exciting horse for next year and was the real eye-catcher. Sparky May was backed into favouritism, but she basically ruined her chance by pulling like a train. Never settled towards the rear (despite the decent gallop), she then pulled herself through down the far side to go towards the head of affairs. Her jockey had no option but to let her bowl on from that point but it showed late on, as her hurdling got more and more sloppy, and she lost second as a result. The second-last flight was quite dramatic as Court In Motion fell when starting to creep into third. He jumped the flight fine but just seemed to lose his footing a few strides later and it was unfortunate as he was in the process of another fine run. He brought down Indian Daudaie at that point, whilst up ahead the front-runners Aikman and Fists Of Fury tried gallantly to rally. Jetnova had travelled quite well and held every chance four from home but could only run on at the one pace, whilst Muldoon's Picnic put up a career-best but this big chasing type just found things happening too quickly late on. Back In Focus was well-beaten; he was outpaced when the tempo quickened and needs much more testing ground, whilst For Non Stop was too keen early on and paid the price as a result. Westmeath was trying to latch onto the leaders turning in, having been given a patient ride. He looked at that point as if he was finding the ground a little on the quick side, but he was still in touch when smashing into the third-last flight; he was pulled up soon after by jockey Davy Russell.
