Verdict

A dramatic finish with the best two jockeys of our generation involved in a thrilling finish, in which Ruby Walsh and his mount FINAL APPROACH pipped Tony McCoy by the narrowest of winning margins: a nose. The result didn't look likely, as after a bad mistake at the first flight, the winner was held-up off the pace. He still had an army of horses ahead of him turning in, and his jockey was certainly hard at work, however the gelding answered every single call and started to run on well. He still had lengths to find at the last but he absolutely winged it, and as his main rival started to hang near the line, he managed to mug him. He was up in the weights for his MCR hurdle win, and he will go up again, so where he heads to next is not clear, but he has the scope to win at a higher level yet. There was a bundle of money for the runner-up, as sporting a tongue-tie for the first time, he had evidently been showing the right signs at home. He was keen early on, but crept into the race under McCoy and was presented beautifully up the hill to go win his race. He was towards the middle of the track, and one cannot help but feel that had the race worked out differently and he had challenged up the rail, then he would have won, as he hung to his right quite badly after the last. Nearby is different horse on this spring ground and he left his recent form behind him, staying on well up the hill having lost his place before the second last hurdle; he gets on really well with young Chris Davies. Cockney Trucker was never too far off the pace, and he had every chance turning in. He battled well, and it was only after the last that any winning effort came to an end. Salden Licht was held-up, and not always too fluent at his obstacles. He's got plenty of class though and ran on well for fifth (without threatening to pick up the leaders), whilst Alaivan looked the likeliest winner coming down the hill. He was swinging away off the bridle, but after racing quite keenly, he then just emptied a little up the hill when swamped by his rivals. Blackstairmountain was next, having made up some ground from a long way off the pace, whilst Dirar started to make an effort after two out but was slightly hampered when trying to hit top stride; he looks high enough in the weights it must be said. Ski Sunday raced too keenly near the pace, and was well-held with fellow front-runners Hunterview and Ellerslie Tom.
