A top-drawer performance from the reigning champion hurdler BINOCULAR as Nicky Henderson's star demolished a small but select field. In a truly run race, Tony McCoy was keen to keep very close tabs on the pacesetter Overturn, indeed he almost jumped the first couple of flights alongside. As fluent as ever over the obstacles, he made a move on the turn for home and took a clear, and ultimately decisive advantage, at the second-last. Whilst Overturn refused to buckle under pressure, he had no hope of keeping tabs on the winner who came nicely clear for a three and three quarter length success. His trainer has suggested that he will have at least one more run before the Festival, for which he was immediately cut to clear favourite with every bookmaker; he will be hard to beat wherever he goes. The runner-up deserves plenty of credit, putting in a fine performance as he stepped up to Grade One for the first time. He was very fluent at his hurdles and is the sort of battler who must be a pleasure to train. He also gives Donald McCain a big clue as to what sort of level Binocular has run up to, as he saddled Peddlers Cross to beat Nicky Henderson's charge in the rearranged Fighting Fifth. Back to this afternoon's race and back in third was Starluck. Billed as his 'Champion Hurdle', he never looked like threatening the first two having been held up and this looks about as good as he is. The disappointment of the race was Khyber Kim. Much was anticipated on this return to action but having tracked Starluck throughout, he was one of the first to come off the bridle and never looked like getting near the leaders. He then walked through the final flight of hurdles which probably exaggerated the distance he lost by. He'll better this, and is not to be discounted from the Champion Hurdle, however he needs to improve massively on this run to be a major player. It should be said that a bigger field will also suit him in March.
