Verdict

ACT OF KALANISI looks a decent purchase at 32,000 guineas following a good performance on his hurdling bow for Dr Richard Newland. The gelding won four times on the Flat for Mark Johnston and ran from a mark of 80 when finishing in midfield in the Cesarewitch last month. The race-fitness of the winner was certainly to his advantage with Secret World (rated 98 on the level) having been absent since June 2008 and it was not unexpected as he was quite well backed. He was always to the fore in a slowly run race and certainly hurdled well in the main with his only mistakes of note coming at the last two flights having taken over from the long-time leader Eastern Supreme at the third last. He was headed by Secret World but battled back very gamely under a strong ride and it would be no surprise if he were to prove better over further given how well he stayed on the Flat; he was given a quote for the Supreme Novices' but he has a long way to go to justify a place in the line-up and the handicap route looks more likely at this stage. In contrast, there were stamina concerns for Secret World who did most of his racing at about a mile on the Flat but he certainly saw the trip out well enough. He travelled well just in behind the pace and hurdled well but just bumped into a stronger rival on the day; better ground and a sharper track may see him in a better light but this was a satisfactory start to his career. Dona was well backed having impressively won a handicap from a mark of 110 (raised to 125) on his seasonal return; he was settled in midfield, made good progress to track the principals through and had every chance but was readily outpointed; he looks to be the best guide to the race. Lieutenant Miller shaped with abundant promise having cut little ice in two runs in bumpers and should win a modest race and could progress but the relative proximity of General Eliott and Fight Club also suggests that the form is only average although both were decent on the level in their prime. Classic Vintage and Teshali were disappointing and will need to improve for time/experience.
