Verdict

BIG BUCK'S, the stand-out staying hurdler of his generation and one of the best of all time, made a smooth return to action and will be hard to beat again this season. He was held-up towards the rear in a steadily run race, made ground easily and only needed to be pushed out under hands and heels by Tony McCoy to win as he liked. He often hits a flat spot in his races but never really came off the bridle and was in a different league. Duc De Regniere mixed hurdling and chasing to good effect last season and looked in need of the run when finishing fourth in the Grade Two hurdle at Wetherby on Charlie Hall day; he had clearly improved from that run and ran a fine race but was just not good enough. He has only had six chase starts (winning four) but may not find life easy in handicaps in either discipline although there is plenty of prize-money on offer for the placed horses in similar contests to this and he should continue to pay his way. Arcalis appeared to run in snatches but moved up well in the straight without being able to get to the leaders; he appeared to get the trip well enough which will give the 10 year-old's connections a few more options as he has done the majority of his racing at around the minimum but he is without a win since dead-heating in 2007. Duke Of Lucca was just short of top-class as a novice and looked set for a promising season before failing to fire in testing ground at Chepstow last month. This was much more like it as he ran well until tiring close home having raced keenly for the first half of the race and he looks capable of picking up a decent prize. Kayf Aramis has been a decent servant to connections and ran well at Wetherby last month but this was a little disappointing as he was one of the first under pressure although, to his credit, he didn't down tools and kept on well enough.
