A shock result to a race that has been won by horses of the calibre of Punchestowns, Bacchanal and Denman in the past. Spirit River was a very well backed favourite and had jumped exceptionally well for a novice until falling at the eleventh. He settled well enough but had pulled himself into the lead by the turn that the field turned out of the home straight and was quite clever at the sixth when getting in a little close but he put in an extra stride when Barry Geraghty asked him to pick up at the eleventh and got it all wrong. IT remains to be seen how his confidence is affected by the fall but he had shaped terribly well prior to that point and remains capable of going to the top. Spirit River's fall should have handed the race to Celestial Halo but the smart hurdler (who fell on his chase bow at Exeter) never really had a decent cut at his fences and didn't travel with his usual fluency. He had tracked the favourite prior to that one's fall but was headed turning for home and a bad mistake at the third last put him out of the race; Noel Fehily allowed him to do his own thing over the final two fences and he showed his class when finishing strongly in the straight. He may just have been remembering his fall at Exeter but Celestial Halo has plenty to prove over fences after this performance. COIS FARRAIG, a winner of an Irish point, had failed to win over hurdles but did chase home a couple of smart Seven Barrows runners in Lush Life and Oscar Whisky and had shaped satisfactorily on his chase debut at Ascot behind Radium. He still needs to brush up on his jumping but stayed on strongly and will stay further in time. On Borrowed Wings travelled smoothly into contention but the concession of 7lbs anchored him; he had jumped well as he had when winning at Stratford on his chase debut and can make further progress in this sphere although handicapping may be his forte. Erzen was pitched in at the deep end and wasn't disgraced; his yard are enjoying a decent run and this useful staying hurdler is sure to be placed to advantage in due course.
