The bumper was run at an understandably steady pace in fading light and testing ground with the field strung out across the track as jockeys went in search of better ground but the pace was quickened by Kartanian and Panache as they moved towards the top of the hill. The field were taken downhill by Panache and Kartanian but Panache soon dropped out of contention as six runners pulled clear. Noel Fehily had to get quite serious with ROCK ON RUBY but he fairly skipped through on the inside of the final turn and had the race won by the furlong marker. Paul Nicholls won this race with Ghizao last year and it would be no surprise to see this gelding makes his mark in Graded contests over the season; his trainer said that he would start off over two and a half miles. Laveroque ran a big race for his promising young trainer and is a half-brother to Pancake who showed a decent level of form over hurdles and fences before losing his way so there should be plenty more to come from him. Kartanian travelled really well throughout the race and this was a very likeable performance from the gelding who is from one of the Aga Khan's good bloodlines; his future also looks sure to lie over obstacles once granted a trip. Rose Of The Moon was the first under pressure of the leading sextet but battled on well and looks a stayer in the making. Cucumber Run failed to live up to a big reputation this season and was caught flat-footed as the pace quickened. He still has plenty to prove but his trainer has hopes that he can develop into an exciting hurdler this season; this half-brother to Somersby may well come on for the run and prove more effective on better ground. Theatrical Star is well related and held in some regard by Colin Tizzard, he travelled well into the race but couldn't go with the leaders - connections had said that he would go hurdling if he wasn't up to Champion Bumper class but they may feel it's worth giving him another chance on better ground.
