The remarkable progression of Neil Mulholland's stable star, MIDNIGHT CHASE, continued with the gelding posting another hugely impressive performance to record his third success at the track this season and maintain his trainer's purple patch. Midnight Chase won his first chase in March from 127 and won his fifth chase here from a mark of 146 and looks capable of continuing his rise on this evidence. He adopted his usual position at the head of affairs under Dougie Costello although he did have company over the first couple of fences from Junior and Gentle Ranger. He moved into a clear advantage as they moved out onto the far side of the track and was never headed thereafter with the only semblance of a mistake coming at the last which did give some hope to supporters of the well backed Any Currency who is a resolute stayer. Martin Keighley's charge hit his usual flat spot but did rally between the last two fences and the last fence mistake of Midnight Chase briefly opened the door but the leader found plenty for pressure whilst Any Currency drifted right-handed across to the stands' side rail where he ran on well to keep Junior at bay. This was a fine run from David Pipe's dual purpose performer (who recorded two valuable successes for the yard on the level in the summer) on ground that may not have been ideal; he did make the odd mistake but has the ability to pick up a decent prize, particularly if allowed his own time out of things in front. Irish National winner, Bluesea Cracker moved into contention travelling very smoothly down the hill but was readily left behind in fourth which was a little disappointing given how well she appeared to be going. Ogee's jumping frailties were exposed again on the first circuit but he'd moved into a challenging position on the second circuit and only gave way with another serious mistake at the top of the hill; he, too, is capable of picking up a decent prize if connections can work on his jumping. Last season's Racing Post Chase winner Razor Royale was right there as the field came down the hill but didn't appear to get home and was allowed to come back in his own time thereafter; this was a better run than his finishing position suggests but it was a very disappointing return to action from the AON Chase winner Tricky Trickster who was under pressure and beaten long before race fitness should have become an issue. Neil Mulholland later suggested that he may look at conditions races for Midnight Chase who was also given a quote for the Grand National.
