Verdict

Titan De Sarti, Nicky Henderson's French import who was unraced over hurdles, already headed the ante-post market for the Triumph Hurdle but was an uneasy favourite for his hurdling debut. The large field were taken along at a decent clip by Green Art in the early stages and there were one or two slight errors in a bunching field with Titan De Sarti and Horatio Caine notably untidy at the second and they were consequently shuffled back through the pack. Grandouet had too much use made of him at Wetherby and was settled in rear as was SAM WINNER but Noel Fehily moved Sam Winner up on the outside as the field moved out into the country and settled him about two or three lengths off the leaders in a field that was covered by around 10 lengths. Architrave, who had some of the best British juvenile form on offer, was amongst those leaders, Titan De Sarti was just behind on the inside of Sam Winner with Grandouet still at rear. Grandouet was a little short of room towards the top of the hill and wasn't very clever at the fifth flight but he was pulled out as they travelled downhill with the big guns poised behind Zakeeta and Two Kisses who were out in front. Sam Winner pecked slightly at the third last but was swinging off the bit and readily extended his advantage having taken up the running from Grandouet at the second last and he had 15 lengths to clear at the line having being brought wide on the track to race against the stands' side rail. This was a much more encouraging run from Grandouet who finished clear of Plan A who just edged out Horatio Caine for third with Titan De Sarti well held in fifth. Plan A represents the same connections as Silk Affair who won the 2009 renewal of the Fred Winter and it would be no surprise to see this gelding targeted at the same race. This was a very taking effort from Horatio Caine as Nick Williams' horses often improve considerably from one run to the next although he looked more of a long-term prospect whilst this was by no means a bad introduction from Titan De Sarti if you ignore the market expectations. As for the winner, this was a hugely impressive start to his British career and it was no surprise to see him promoted to favouritism for the Triumph Hurdle following victory in a race that has been won by the likes of Fair Along, Katchit and Franchoek in recent years.
