Verdict

The absence of Derby and Arc winner Workforce due to concerns about the ground was clearly a blow to the prestige and quality of a contest that was dominated by the European challenge. Behkabad (whose connections opted not to run on Lasix) was expected to maintain the good record of horses that had been beaten in the Arc in this race but he ultimately came up short having had every chance; it's possible that the race in Longchamp had taken its toll on him as he was some way below his best. The first two home were the first two throughout but the chasing pack had got close enough to the front pair in the straight to believe that the race was won on merit. Champ Pegasus was strongly ridden to get the lead with Dangerous Midge (who was running on Lasix in first time blinkers had played up a little on the way to the post) also racing keenly from the gate to challenge the leader but Dettori was soon content to let the American runner go on as he settled in second ahead of Behkabad, Debussy on the inside of Telling with Al Khali on the outside of Winchester in rear. Rosario slowed the pace right down as they moved into the straight for the first time and it wasn't until they passed the four pole that the pace began to quicken. Dettori was alive to any move by the leader and moved up to about three parts of a length ahead of the turn at the end of the back straight with Behkabad about 3 lengths adrift. Champ Pegasus looked to be travelling the better of the pair round the final two turns with Dettori rowing along and the front pair looked in trouble with Behkabad and Debussy getting a great run up the hedge into the straight as Champ Pegasus moved off the rail turning in with Dangerous Midge almost relegated to fourth, wide on the track. Remarkably though, the challenges came to nought as Dettori rousted Dangerous Midge along to gain yet another Breeders' Cup success for Brian Meehan and his tenth success with Behkabad holding on for third ahead of Winchester who finished off the race to good effect.
