Verdict

Todd Pletcher's domination of the Breeders Cup juvenile races continued with a dominant display from Uncle Mo who has always been held in high regard by his trainer. He looked very good when winning on debut at Saratoga, ran the second fastest time over a mile when winning the Champagne Stakes at Belmont and produced the performance that everyone hoped that he was capable of here prompting his trainer to say "I don't get goosebumps very often but that performance gave me chills". The field all jumped well although Jaycito, one of the leading fancies for the race, quickly tailed off as though something was amiss; it's possible that he didn't face the kickback on his first run on this surface. Riveting Reason took the field along with Johnny Velazquez perfectly placed to challenge and getting a lovely tow in behind the pace, just ahead of main market rival Boys At Tosconova (who tracked his every move), J. B.'s Thunder, Biondetti and Stay Thirsty. At around the halfway stage of the race Velazquez took a confident look over his shoulder to see how the opposition was travelling and then moved swiftly alongside Riveting Reason as the leader moved into the first bend. He was in front turning into the straight and still travelling better than anything as Boys At Tosconova - himself held in high regard by Richard Dutrow Jr - struggling to go with him. He bravely gave chase and did reduce the margin of defeat but the winner was a class apart and was promoted to favourite for the Kentucky Derby as a result; coincidentally he became the widest margin winner of this race since Street Cry who is the only winner of this race to have gone on to win the Derby. Boys Of Tosconova is clearly useful and was a clear second ahead of Rogue Romance (who made late gains) and Biondetti (who emerges from the race with credit) in fourth.
