A dramatic race that brought an end to the European dominance of the Marathon. Romp was the first to show but was quickly passed by the expected pacemaker Gabriel's Hill who was followed through by Precision Break and Atoned and Gabriel's Hill took them along at a very steady pace; Johnny Murtagh had Bright Horizon tucked away in midfield with the market leader Giant Oak held-up at the rear of the field. Giant Oak made ground on the outside as the field went out onto the back stretch with the order up front unchanged as the tempo was gradually wound up by the leader. Precision Break and Bright Horizon were both pumped along before the turn for home but Eldaafer loomed up large in second with Awesome Gem also closing. Gabriel's Hill took a couple of lengths out of the field but was soon challenged and passed by ELDAAFER who had been joined by Prince Will I Am and that pair duelled to the line with Diane Alvarado's gelding getting the upper hand. The drama unfolded quickly after the race with a stewards enquiry called, the result made official and then changed as Prince Will I Am, who finished second, thrown out promoting Gabriel's Hill to second and A. U. Miner into the frame. The latter had finished well from off the pace with Giant Oak who was placed fourth. Johnny Velazquez had caused serious interference when moving Prince Will I Am off the rail on the turn for home, badly interfering with the weakening Romp (who was lucky not to be brought down), Bright Horizon and A. U. Miner.
