Verdict

Picture Editor had proved very popular in the ante-post market for the Derby following a smooth success from Nathaniel (who had chased home Frankel on debut) in a Doncaster maiden and a ready win in a non-event at Leicester but the bubble was burst in no uncertain terms. He did have something to find on the figures as he was rated a stone below Measuring Time who has had his limitations exposed having finished second to Native Khan in a Sandown Group 3 and then again in a Salisbury Listed race but Henry Cecil's colt was expected to prove up to the task. Ian Mongan settled him well enough in behind a steady pace set by Barathea Dancer, Point Du Jour and Measuring Time before pulling him out to get some daylight at around the five furlong pole with Shooting Gallery on his inside as the pair prepared to make their challenges. The pace quickened as they passed four out and around two out Measuring Time drifted left towards the stands side rail across Picture Editor and Shooting Gallery but neither Ian Mongan nor Ahmed Ajtebi had to stop riding. Picture Editor was then switched towards the middle of the track as Ian Mongan looked to get him back on an even keel but he carried his head a shade awkwardly and never looked like closing the gap on Measuring Time who was making the best of his way home against the rail. INDIGO WAY had been held up in touch of the pack in the middle of the track but had by now been switched by Ryan Moore to follow Measuring Time through and the pair laid down a strong challenge from the furlong pole to prevail by a short-head with Picture Editor staying on at the one pace in third. The winner is clearly progressive but was rated just 88 going into the race and the relative proximity of the fourth home Barathea Dancer (who may have been flattered by the soft lead and slow pace) also goes some way to holding the form down. Henry Cecil reported that Picture Editor may have gone over the top and it will be interesting to see if he can live up to his billing next season and he remains the one horse in the race with the scope to go on to better things.
