Verdict

One of the most authoritative performances of the afternoon with the once-raced CARLTON HOUSE storming clear for a nine length success. The rain-softened ground may have helped to exaggerate the winning distance but it was hard not to be impressed. In all likelihood he'll be put away now but if kept in training next year he remains one to keep the Windsor fires warm this winter. Never too far away from a solid enough pace set by the Norwegian runner Ecological, he was going so easily that Ryan Moore had no option but to hit the front with three furlongs still left to go. Quickly two lengths up, he then stretched away impressively. Second spot went to newcomer Yaseer who was held-up in the early stages by his jockey but came through with a strong challenge around runners. The bird had already flown by then but he did all of his work unaided by the whip and really caught the eye. Estourah was a couple of lengths further back in third which on balance was probably slightly disappointing. He travelled well, moving up from a near midfield position to dispute the lead going well, but was then left for dead by the winner. He'll pick up a race, perhaps on slightly better ground, but he doesn't look a stable star. Unlike some of the earlier maidens there weren't too many eye catchers further back. Spirit Of Gondree travelled well but his finishing effort didn't match up, whilst further back there was a glimmer of promise from Atlas Shrugged under hands and heels. Silenzio travelled well near the pace but his jockey stood up in the irons from over a furlong out suggesting that all may not have been right late on. Muqtarrib, having shaped nicely at Newmarket on debut, moved nicely in midfield but was soon left behind, and indeed the better run here may have come from Swindy who shaped as if needing a test of stamina in seventh spot. One place ahead of him was Sergeant Troy who now qualifies for handicaps.
