Verdict

An open maiden on paper with some interesting newcomers but it was the experience of AL KAZEEM that helped him see off the rangy Thimaar in a finish where the pair were miles clear. Both horses travelled well throughout and their jockeys had no choice but to hit the front two furlongs out almost at the same time. The winner just seemed a little wiser in the closing stages and should go on to better things. The second home is big and probably still on the weak side but he raced with enthusiasm and looks a promising sort for the top handicaps next season at least. Eight or so lengths back saw a good battle for third between two horses from Freemason Lodge with Tonnerre just pipping Goodness to bronze. Two contrasting runs really as Ryan Moore was hard at work on Tonnerre from half-way but he responded well and considering his pedigree it was no surprise to see him running on best at the finish; he did sport a Monty Roberts rug prior to the start. Stablemate Goodness was noted throughout doing some sterling work and his jockey wasn't overly hard on him with the majority of his finish ridden out under hands and heels without the whip. Great Shot was too keen in-front considering they didn't go too quickly and he looks like he needs more time, whilst there was promise further back from Xclaim who ran on once the race was over. Web Of Dreams dropped away having raced prominently and his jockey certainly used the whip to encourage, but along with Sandusky, who was green and under pressure from some way out, there wasn't an awful lot of promise to be gleaned.
