Verdict

A truly-run handicap and ultimately a very impressive performance from ANY GIVEN DAY. Under the promising conditional rider Henry Brooke, the horse was always travelling with enthusiasm and it was a key move down the hill to get closer to the pace that helped set up this victory. He was then ion the perfect position to jump to the front four out and he then shot away from the field. He treated his final two hurdles with disdain, booting both out of the ground, but much to his jockey's delight his balance was steady and he was eased down to win as he liked. The handicapper will have a go and it remains to be seen how flattering this run was. The reason for doubt may be the fact that the front-runner Hills Of Aran was able to rally and take fourth spot having dropped back through the field like a stone through water just after half-way. The horse to chase home the winner was Dantari who is not the best handicapped of horses but he tries hard and was another who was always near the pace. Restless Harry ran a promising race; he came to dispute the lead down the hill before getting outpaced turning for home. This future chaser ran on well however and was doing some of his best work late on to fill third spot and connections will be pleased with the outing. Mad Moose, having travelled well near the pace throughout, could only muster a one-paced finish and along with Chief Yeoman and Benbane Head chased home the first four. The latter, another who will be chasing sooner rather than later, jumped some of his obstacles like fences and hit some others so this was a solid enough first try in handicaps. The disappointment of the race was Duke Of Lucca. he ground probably went against him but he was another who wasn't fluent at the hurdles from an early stage and he was never in the hunt, dropping back from midway; fences probably await. Pistolet Noir was another to disappoint and he was caught flat-footed when the pace quickened down the hill. He's only four however and remains capable of much better with this run under his belt. Sir Harry Ormesher fell four out when not compeltely out of the hunt for places and in the process hampered Tullamore Dew.
