Verdict

Hankies to the fore as old stager MONET'S GARDEN jumped to victory, landing his third Old Roan Chase in the most wonderful of fashions. Sent into a clear early lead at a good clip by substitute rider Dougie Costello, there was only one mistake of note around halfway when he took off yards too early and almost landed on top of the fence. However he put that error to the back of his mind and despite a closing pack of four (Watch My Back always detached in last) he continued to jump well. Albertas Run was pushed up by McCoy to chase in second spot but it became apparent that he was in trouble before the turn for home as his athletic pilot became more animated, and the main dangers emerged as Poquelin, I'msingingtheblues and Tartak. The latter had made several mistakes throughout the race but to his credit he was still on the bridle before the fourth last and it was only from then on that he started to struggle. He looked big enough despite his trainer adopting a more aggressive training regime and should come on plenty for the outing but his fencing needs to improve if he is to make the jump up from nearly horse. It was at the fourth last fence, the cross fence, that I'msingingthblues came down, losing his balance on landing and eventually unseating his rider. He had moved well up until then and looks an interesting prospect for his new yard having jumped well before that misdemeanour. Meanwhile Poquelin was stalking Monet's Garden and looked the most menacing of dangers as the rest were left behind. He was still on the bridle two out but his experienced rival was making a length or so on him at each fence, and despite his jockey Barry Geraghty switching him for another run, he could never get past the grey. A wonderful leap at the last by Nicky Richards' star broke the heart of Poquelin coming away from the fence and although he ran on well to close down the leader, the half-length verdict at the line was never in doubt. Two fine performances; this is job done for Monet's Garden but he'll be back here later in the season, whilst Poquelin, whose Cheltenham form has often bettered his runs elsewhere, will surely head to Cheltenham for another crack at the Ryanair in March.
