The reappearance of Mille Chief but an anticlimax, as having been easy to back all-day, he could only finish fifth. Having said that his jockey (and horse) did well to avoid the faller Hector's House four hurdles from home. The win went to the race-fit NEARBY who travelled very well throughout and picked up well to win cosily from Heron Bay in second. The latter gets a big mention as he did best of those who had raced promiently, despite the pace seeming to be modest throughout. The front-runer Westlin' Winds was given an easy time of things in the lead but he got in too close to a couple of hurdles and weakened out of things from four out having been swamped. The first two home were some way ahead of chaser-in-the-making Kauto Relko with Charingworth a never-nearer fourth under a very patient ride from Graham Lee. He looks one to follow next time when the moeny is down. The major incident of the race came at the fourth hurdle from home when Hector's House fell, taking down Caravel and Gifted Leader who had both attracted market support at double-figure odds. The incident resulted in an injury to jockey Trevor Whelan, rider of the last-named. Elsewhere Hector's Choice, on his first run for Richard Lee, made a bad mistake at the last when retreating out of the fight, whilst Culcabock was another to get tired on his first run of the season.
