Verdict

An interesting maiden with the beautifully-bred DEVASTATION bringing the best form into the race. Although not sent off favourite due to support for Complexion, she was authoritative in victory and whilst likely to now be put away she looks a nice prospect for Listed races at least next season. The race was slowly-run so William Buick always had her in the best position just in behind the leaders and once taking up the running two furlongs out (when still on the bridle) she kicked away and looked likely to waltz home. However she idled in-front and her stablemate Izzi Top chased her hard to the line and was only a length down at the finish. The latter deserves plenty of credit as the only horse to come from off the pace with any meaningful challenge. Her jockey had to navigate a way though like a learner driver crossing lanes on the motorway and she may have made even more of a race of it were it not for the weakening Alluring Star halting her in a run. The third home was the sizeable Encore Une Annee who came from off the pace having found things happening too quickly in the dash from two furlongs out. The disappointment of the race was favourite Complexion. This half-sister to the stable's Zacinto had shaped with promise at Kempton coming from off the pace but here she was under pressure before the three furlong marker having held a prominent position throughout. Although keen enough early on, she dropped back through the field before running on again to fill sixth; she looks like she needs more time. Mantatsi, one of two in the field owned by Lady Halifax, ran a race full of promise in fourth spot. Reem Star was green as grass throughout but really caught the eye staying on well for hands and heels riding, whilst Mujarah was another filly to catch the eye allowed to come home in her own time; she looks one for nurseries or handicaps off a relatively lowly mark. Spey Song is relatively exposed but with her official rating of 79 she gives the form some more substance by finishing a well-held fifth, whilst elsewhere there were promising first efforts from Armoise and the front-running Jeu De Vivre.
