Verdict

AAIM TO PROSPER confirmed his liking for a stamina-sapping contest at HQ with a gutsy win over La Vecchia Scuola. Seventh in this race last year off a 2lb lower mark, Brian Meehan offset that and more by booking 3lb claimer Louis-Philippe Beuzelin and the 19-year-old jockey didn't disappoint the Manton handler after a textbook ride. Racing prominently after bagging the rail from a favourable high draw, Beuzelin eased his mount into the contest and took up the running fully half a mile from home. The six-year-old quickly put four lengths between himself and the field and had enough left in the tank to repel the late thrust from Jim Goldie's runner-up. Though the winner only just held on in the final strides, the way he quickened clear at the four-furlong pole suggests he may have more to offer when dropped back to two miles, whatever the handicapper decides to do. Those closest to Aaim To Prosper at the finish were held up early on with La Vecchia Scuola and Plymouth Rock finishing best of all. The latter didn't get a clear run three furlongs out, had to be switched out wide by Darryll Holland and can count himself a tad unlucky, though it's hard to say whether he would've won granted a clear passage. Ocean's Minstrel was short of room at about the same point, but not to the same extent, and stayed on well himself. Palomar, who had off-putting form figures on the Flat but had won over hurdles recently, stayed on well when a gap opened on the far rail to grab fifth place ahead of Sentry Duty, who was another to suffer slight interference when the race for home began half a mile out. Red Cadeaux was the first home from the single-figure drawn horses in ninth, while the well-fancied Irish challengers Universal Truth and Admiral Barry failed to make any impact.
