Verdict

A big field and an open classic but LOPE DE VEGA turned it into a one-horse affair from some way out. Sat right on the heels of the pacemaker, the French 2000 Guineas winner stayed the extra distance in style, quickening two furlongs from home and never in any danger of being caught. His odds have been cut for the Arc but he has loads of speed and connections are more keen to go back to a mile with him. Runner-up Planteur does look more of a middle distance type and stayed on late in the day to suggest a mile and a half would suit him nicely. Pain Perdu ran a good race to fill the frame as Viscount Nelson fared best of the foreign contingent in fifth place. Cape Blanco looked to have a big chance judged on his Dante win over Workforce but could never get out of the middle rank and was involved in a bit of bumping in the home straight. Ryan Moore was searching for another Classic win on board Ice Blue this weekend but he got warm beforehand and was never really a factor.
