PRIME DEFENDER sprung a 20-1 surprise here, perhaps benefitting from race-fitness on his fourth start of the campaign. The Khalid Abdullah-owned pair of Showcasing and Main Aim were both having their first starts of the season and both ran creditable races in defeat. The winner was bustled along at halfway but he was always prominent and once he got past the front-running Inxile inside the final quarter mile it was a case of catch me if you can. Showcasing thundered down the outside under William Buick but couldn't quite reel the winner in while Main Aim was outpaced at a key part of the contest but stayed on well for third. He looks a seven-furlong horse, or at least at stiff six, but the turn of foot Showcasing produced suggests he can play a major role in the sprint division this season. He was slashed for the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot and it looks a natural next step for him, and he should reverse the form with Prime Defender who is usually found wanting at the top level. Doncaster Rover ran a cracking race, following Showcasing down the middle of the track to get fourth. A slight drop in grade should see him win a nice race. Starspangledbanner looked the likely challenger to Prime Defender approaching the final furlong but his effort petered out. Still, this was promising, and he was beaten just over two lengths in the end which wasn't bad considering his 5lb G1 penalty. He could still have a say at Royal Ascot. Inxile couldn't burn these off over six furlongs and he would be of interest dropped back to the minimum trip. Sayif was a disappointing ninth on the face of it but he carried a 3lb penalty, should come on for this and will be of interest off level weights over a stiffer six.
