Verdict

A scintillating display from WORKFORCE, who trounced his rivals and broke the track record for the Derby in the process. Always regarded as top-notch performer in the making, his defeat in the Dante Stakes had raised some question marks. But that was put down to the bit slipping through his mouth and with that problem solved, the real Workforce emerged in spectacular fashion. He travelled nicely in midfield before Ryan Moore sent him in pursuit of pacesetting At First Sight off Tattenham Corner and once he had reeled him in, the race was over as he scorched clear to the line to score by seven lengths. At First Sight was sent off at 100/1 but only Workforce managed to get past him. He loved bowling along in front under Seamus Heffernan and kept on in grand style although the winner vanished into the distance. Rewilding was left bit flat-footed off the home turn but then stayed on once again for third - he was never in any danger of landing a blow in terms of the winner. Favourite Jan Vermeer looked to move okay through the race but Johnny Murtagh reported after he was never really happy and his mount lost a couple of shoes. His fourth in the circumstances was a fair performance and it has to be remembered this was just 13 days after his previous outing. Al Zir looked to run out of stamina after travelling well and plugged on at once pace while Coordinated Cut did some fair late work to press for a place but was never really a factor. Azmeel and and Bullet Train both dropped back through the field having raced prominently while Midas Touch seemed to run his race but looked outclassed.
