Verdict

A typical performance from a Mark Johnston runner as DRILL SERGEANT sat in a good position all the way round, challenged early in the straight before finding plenty for pressure and keeping on to the line. He has enjoyed a very consistent campaign so far and his handler felt he was perhaps creeping a little too high in the weights but he never looked like losing this once striking for the judge. Stablemate Record Breaker hit top gear inside the final furlong but could not quite muster enough to chase down the winner. He is another who rarely seems to run a poor race and must be commended for his consistency. That statement applies to Ascot standing dish Young Mick, who was an excellent fourth at the track he loves so much. He is a great credit to connections and will surely have another race in him this season. Martyr lost nothing in defeat in finishing a place better than Young Mick but favourite Crackentorp was below his best as he faded from the two marker. Hatton Flight came into the race in great heart but his bid was over after a few yards when he unseated William Buick exiting the stalls.
