Verdict

A fifth win in nine years in this contest for Mark Johnston who got off the mark for the meeting with HOLBERG who outstayed his rivals in the end. Four were in with chances inside the final furlong and for a moment Richard Hills looked likely to get the hat-trick aboard Tactic. However, as his and Yankee Doodle's challenges faltered in the closing stages, Mastery stayed on for third while the winner found another gear next to the rail. This was Holberg's first attempt at any trip over a mile and a half and he can progress into a contender for the cup races next season. Dhushan was well backed but ran too freely out in front and was never going to have the energy to compete at the death.
