A first victory of the season for GULF EXPRESS, who has belatedly confirmed the promise he showed when winning two handicaps at the end of his three-year-old season. Ryan Moore anchored his mount towards the back of the field on the inside in the early stages as Luberon and Levera set the early pace, before pulling him out into the centre of the track to mount his challenge in the straight. The response was immediate, and he got to the front in a matter of strides, cutting up eventual runner-up Pinpoint as he edged right towards the rail. A stewards' enquiry was called but the interference made little difference to the result as the winner had plenty in hand on these and won going away. He's probably value for a little bit more than the official winning margin of 1 1/4 lengths as he doesn't look the easiest of rides. Handicaps could be a thing of the past for him once the assessor adjusts his mark. Pinpoint also came from a low draw, and ran a good race in defeat, as did Watamu who stayed on well. Eradicate and Proponent both travelled into the race well and looked likely dangers two furlongs out - but both lacked a finishing kick. They had no excuses and look to be struggling off career-high marks.
