A thrilling renewal, despite the absence of the Classic generation. And DUKE OF MARMALADE proved his undoubted quality by coming out on top in a battle royal with Papal Bull. The Duke was driven to the front by Johnny Murtagh early in the Ascot straight, but Papal Bull - ridden for the first time by Olivier Peslier - quickly closed the gap and went a neck up inside the final furlong. Just when it looked an upset was on the cards though Murtagh pulled his whip through into his right hand and conjured one final effort from the Duke. He battled back superbly to score in great style. This pair were well clear of Youmzain, who laboured in third after seeing the front two get first run on him. He was squeezed for room when Papal Bull roared past. Further back Lucarno and Ask both had every chance, while the O'Brien second string Macarthur was disappointing. He was never travelling particularly well and folded early in the straight, dropping out to finish last.
