Verdict

The first five home were drawn 1-5 to give further credence to the low bias evident throughout the week and it was KINGSGATE NATIVE from box three who proved fastest of them all. His 33-1 starting price was branded an insult by trainer John Best post-race and in hindsight it proved to be so. The concerns for punters were the short four-day break between this and his seasonal appearance in the King's Stand but he showed much more early speed over the six furlongs and held off the late challenge of War Artist to score by over a length. This was a brilliant performance for a three-year-old against his elders and there can be no mistaking his class. He may have been a Group One winner as a two-year-old but he still had something to prove without such a generous allowance and that is no longer the case - he is a top class sprinter and will take all the beating in the July Cup. A drop back in trip to five furlongs in the Nunthorpe will also be considered and we know that won't be a problem so he could go to York well-fancied to record back-to-back successes. War Artist ran an excellent race, always prominent and just beaten for speed by the winner. A top prize awaits him. Sir Gerry fared well in third but there were some hard-luck stories in behind. Marchand d'Or was squeezed for room but finished well, while Sakhee's Secret should be forgiven this run as he was eased down in the final furlong after not acting on the ground.
