Verdict

It was fitting the 16 jockeys for the 2008 Vodafone Derby should salute the legendary Vincent O'Brien as they entered the paddock before receiving last-minute riding instructions ahead of the world's most prestigious Flat race. O'Brien, the trainer of six Derby winners during his imperious career, was the guest of honour for his first visit to Epsom for over 15 years and hewas treated to a thrilling spectacle as New Approach cemented his place in racing history with an exceptional perfomance. The son of Galileo refused to settle for Kevin Manning in the early stages then weaved an erratic route as he forced his way through to join the leaders with two furlongs left to run. Manning switched the colt to the far rail and, with his head down in a drive for the line, New Approach fended off Tartan Bearer to register a famous victory. New Approach had been at the centre of a controversial entry process for the Derby and his trainer, Jim Bolger, had faced stern critique for announcing he would be an unlikely runner and it was only a fortuitous mistake that he was left in at the last forfeit stage. He said: "I've said I made a mistake and I see no need to keep highlighting it. This is very special to me. I thought before the race it would be up there with the best. I willingly say it is the best". The winning owner, HRH Princess Haya Of Jordan, was brimming with admiration for the enigmatic three-year-old and was thrilled that her husband, Sheik Mohammed, has now fulfilled his ambition of winning racing's most elusive prize. She said: "To think we'd have his Derby dream together is wonderful. He (New Approach) showed he has brilliance in him that he has never shown before". Tartan Bearer was a gallant runner up having come with a sweeping run down the centre of the track. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt is undoubtedly a top-class individual and he will be a formidable opponent if he now heads to the Irish Derby at the end of this month. Casual Conquest was held up in mid division before making ground at the halfway stage. However he lacked a change of gear in the closing stages and could not match the front pair. Doctor Fremantle briefly looked like he was going to justify the support he received before the off but faded when headed a furlong out. Washington Irving raced prominently throughout and did well to hold his position, while his stablemate Alessandro Volta made late gains but did not have the pace to be a serious threat. Rio De La Plata was already struggling when he was hampered two furlongs and had no excuses. Curtain Call was never a threat and hung badly to the left when asked for an effort. He was eased in the final furlong and may not have handled the course. Johnny Murtagh's mount King Of Rome was another that failed to shine. The 2008 Derby was a great advert for the sport and, whatever the opinions of the betting public in the build up to the race, few would argue as Sheikh Mohammad summed up the winner's performance in a simple statement. "He's a brilliant horse".
