Verdict

RED MERLIN is improving fast and can win again; the shortlist consists of Deutschland, Munsef, Warringah and Changingoftheguard. Clive Cox's gelding has had a fine season and holds Munsef and a few others on their run at Haydock last time out. The handicapper has spat his dummy out with a whopping 11lb rise in the weights but he is on the upgrade and is narrowly preferred. The Irish challenge consists of Sesenta, Deutschland, Siberian Tiger and Changingoftheguard and it looks a strong one. The last-named is a progressive three-year-old and he was impressive at Down Royal last time out. Manyriverstocross looks nicely-weighted for Alan King, Warringah is a strong stayer who has a plum draw and the step back up in trip looks a good move, whilst Hits Only Vic probably needs some rain to feature heavily. There's plenty of headgear on show, including for the first time on Camps Bay who remains capable of better, whilst Desert Sea has a solid chance off this mark of 96 following a Listed win at Sandown last time. Tony Culhane is back on Northumberland Plate hero Som Tala, whilst Brian Ellison has some interesting runners at the botom of the weights. Another closely matched renewal, and narrow preference is for Red Merlin.
