There have been three surprise results in the past five years in this top St Leger trial. SEVILLE, runner-up to Carlton House in the Dante here, put a poor Epsom performance behind him with superb runs in the Irish Derby and Grand Prix De Paris. He'll enjoy a little cut in the ground more than most and will take some beating. Sea Moon landed a handicap from a mark of 92 over 1m2f here in June and that form would be nowhere near good enough for this but he's always been highly regarded and that was a stepping-stone to bigger and better things. Namibian has stepped out of handicaps to land Group 3's at Ascot and Goodwood and is a rapidly improving colt who has to be on the short-list while if there is to be a surprise it could be provided by Al Kazeem, whose four runs to date have all been at Newbury but who has an outstanding middle-distance pedigree and should be suited by the step-up in trip.
Al Kazeem 9-2 (9-4) Made all, quickened 2f out, clear over 1f out, ran on well, won at Newbury 1m 2f 3yo hcp 0-105 (2) gf in May beating Labarinto (8-10) by 1 1/4l, 8 ran.
Genius Beast (USA) 11-1 (8-12) Raced wide, held up, headway to chase leading pair 4f out, ridden over 3f out, lost 3rd 2f out, weakened over 1f out, 6th of 10, 20l behind Nathaniel (8-12) at Royal Ascot 1m 4f 3yo Grp 2 (1) gs in Jun.
Hunter's Light (IRE) 8-1 (9-0) Held up, switched left over 2f out, ridden and headway over 1f out, went 3rd and edged right inside final furlong, not able to challenge front pair, 3rd of 10, 1 1/2l behind Namibian (9-3) at Goodwood 1m 4f 3yo Grp 3 (1) gd in Jul.
Namibian (IRE) 7-1 (9-3) Tracked leaders and took keen hold early stages, steadied 7f out, ridden and headway over 2f out, led over well 1f out, edged right and headed inside final furlong, battled back gamely to get back up close home, won at Goodwood 1m 4f 3yo Grp 3 (1) gd in Jul beating Fiorente (9-0) by nk, 10 ran.
