Verdict

Plenty in with chances in an open heat but Border Subject is the choice to reverse recent Newmarket form with The Tatling and Royal Millennium while Pomfret Lad is respected as a lively threat. This quartet clashed in a competitive handicap over this trip in 1,000 Guineas day when The Tatling came with his usual late run to pass the post first but was later demoted to runner-up having caused interference. Royal Millennium was a close third and Border Subject fourth while Pomfret Lad found trouble in running and looked unlucky in sixth. The Tatling has progressed well since being switched to Milton Bradley's yard last season, winning at Sandown and York and was also a close runner-up behind the smart Funfair Wane in the valuable Ayr Gold Cup. The six-year-old should land a decent prize this year while Royal Millennium is arguably even more effective over an extra furlong so Border Subject is preferred. Roger Charlton's consistent front runner helped to force a very strong pace at Headquarters and only gave best well inside the final furlong to be beaten less than half-a-length. The son of Selkirk should enjoy dictating terms in this smaller field and should prove hard to beat from a favourable draw.
