In depth

Verdict

An ordinary way to open the first of three days of racing on the Knavesmire and there is plenty of deadwood to sift through in arriving at a shortlist. However, Forbearing, who makes his debut for the Martin Pipe yard today, has the most solid claims and is given the vote over Mark Of Zorro, Every Note Counts and Football Crazy - although a move for the Mick Easterby-trained Graft should not be dismissed out of hand for a place at least. Many of the remainder have become expensive to follow in recent times and supporting the likes of Saraaf, Donnas Double and Unshaken is for the brave only. Therefore, Forbearing, who was claimed for ¿15,000 after winning a similar event at Catterick in August, is the logical choice to continue paying his way for his new connections. George Duffield knows the six-year-old very well from his time with Sir Mark Prescott and has guided the horse to victory on three previous occasions in claimers this season - the first of which came over course and distance; where he showed great tenacity to hold off Every Note Counts by a neck despite being disadvantaged by some 13lb at the weights. It is interesting that Pipe has put Forbearing in at such a low weight for this claimer and he must be confident of collecting in spite of a less than advantageous draw. Mark Of Zorro has found a new lease of life in recent times and, with his confidence on a high after a gutsy win at Leicester in September, he rates as the biggest danger to Forbearing on these terms.
