Nonrunner

In depth

Verdict

A tricky maiden for punters here with a number of the runners proving a shade disappointing and expensive to follow, and it might be worth taking a chance on RED EXPRESSO. Michael Bell's gelding has to contend with a 523-day absence from the racecourse after two runs in the spring of last year. His debut had offered plenty of promise, but he failed to improve second time and presumably something must have been amiss for him to be kept in his box for so long. Now that he is back and racing over a much more suitable trip here, and with his yard continuing to produce winners, we will side with him to improve and take first prize. Great Knight has had plenty of chances to win over five, six and seven furlongs and has been frustrating, finishing runner-up on four of his eight starts. Despite slipping in the weights he flopped in a handicap for the first time at Lingfield last month and William Haggas has him back in a maiden here. Mazaris is likely to start favourite here and he has not been out of the first four on five starts to date. The drop back to 7f may help, though the jury is out, and he just seems to struggle to find an extra gear when it is needed. Seventh Cavalry is persevered with by connections in this grade and he keeps knocking on the door to success, but so far it has proved difficult for him to push it open. The drop to this trip for the first time is worth a go, though it is not certain to suit, and we will take him on. Duty Doctor has a bit of ability but is an inconsistent filly.
