In depth

Verdict

ORANGE RIVER can make a successful handicap debut in a race where Silky Steps, Catholic Hill and Royal Manor also merit attention. John Gosden's filly ran in maidens won by decent sorts in Ghaidaa and Basque Beauty on her first two starts so it was no real surprise that she was able to cope. She was well enough held at Bath last time but didn't enjoy the clearest of passages and can be rated a little better than the bare form. She's been handed a very fair mark and can make the most of it. Royal Manor also steps into handicap company for the first time here having finished at a respectful distance to two useful sorts in her two runs this year. The handicapper has allotted her a fair perch too and she could step up on the form that she's shown to date. We know a little more about Silky Steps who has been running well enough on the all-weather lately to think that she can be a factor here and of Catholic Hill who scored at Kempton last time. She's 9lbs higher and on a different surface but cannot be left out of the equation given the ease of her success. We'll be taking her on though with Orange River.
