    In depth

    Verdict

Kalam Daleel could be anything but with plenty of pace in his pedigree this extra furlong raises a question and instead it is the progressive STAGS LEAP who is preferred to Lamh Albasser. Richard Hannon has another strong hand this year in the juvenile department and Stags Leap was well-backed before winning a competitive maiden at Goodwood. A step up in class after that performance was inevitable and he looks likely to improve further for this quicker ground. Suffolk Punch was also last seen at Goodwood when not disgraced in a very competitive nursery. Despite finishing in eighth place, Andrew Balding's runner was only beaten by two lengths and cannot be overlooked here. Muwalla needs to improve on a debut fourth at Beverley and his trainer likes to aim high, Avonrose is the second highest rated in the race and she gets plenty of weight from the boys, whilst Palio Square needs to step up on just a fair York debut. Kalam Daleel beat rivals who are now rated 67, 51 and 60, so he was entitled to win as he did last time at Brighton. On a strict form line through Ginger Grey he would look to hold an advantage over the Godolphin runner. The last-named was disappointing last time out when well-fancied (15/8 favourite) for a Listed race at Ascot and he will need to show improved form here, although the quicker ground may be more suitable than the unique Ascot surface faced last time. An intriguing contest in which Stags Leap can take another step forward.
