Verdict

Little separates Cheers For Thea and Battlemaiden at the weights but both may struggle to contain DR WINTRINGHAM, who gets the vote. Karen George's filly has reportedly improved for the warm weather recently and that certainly has been demonstrated in her performances on the track. Having won over this trip at Chepstow, she readily defied a penalty over a mile here and a further 8lb rise may not be enough to stop her going in again. She'll want a proper gallop at this distance but should get that courtesy of Battlemaiden. Mark Johnston's charge won over a mile three starts back and showed she remains in good heart when second at Carlisle recently. However, she ultimately gave best to Cheers For Thea and a 3lb turnaround at the weights may not be enough to reverse that form here. Since fitted with the combination of blinkers and a tongue-tie the latter has won half of her starts, although it's surely worth noting she's not yet won back-to-back contests and usually follows a win with a disappointment. That lack of consistency is enough for us to look elsewhere. Carcinetto could prove overpriced having shown more in a claimer last time, over a trip which stretches her stamina. She returns to handicap company off a fair mark but is better on artificial surfaces and, while she can run well, it's hard to envisage her gaining her first success of 2010. Night Lily drops in grade having disappointed at Newmarket last time; the concern with her isn't this mark of 77, more the drop to seven furlongs as all wins have come at a mile. Poppet's Lovein is gradually dropping to a fair mark, now just 2lbs higher than for her sole handicap success, and her turn is close but this race could be another belonging to Dr Wintringham.
