In depth

Verdict

The consistent YORK CLIFF is holding his form well and has bright prospects of gaining an overdue success. Blue Hills goes well at Southwell and has to rate as a big threat, while Cumbrian Knight is expected to strip fitter after last month's return to racing; so he cannot be discounted either. Having been sidelined since June, Cumbrian Knight was badly in need of the outing when he finished down the field at Wolverhampton 23 days ago. That run can be forgiven. The gelding is a regular in events such as this and, having won for today's pilot back in January, he has a solid chance of being in the shake-up. He is an effective weight carrier and can go well despite being at the top of the handicap. Blue Hills is also better than he showed last time out and lurks as a potential spoiler for the selection. Marie King knows peter Hiatt's gelding very well and, having won for her in March; Blue Hills can be virtually guaranteed to give his all for the rider. However, York Cliff has the best recent form profile and is fancied to be hard to master if all the pieces fit together today. The mount of Ben Brisbourne loves to weave his way through the field and is usually content to track the pace. He has string together a series of good performances of late and persevering with the 10-year-old can reap a fair reward today.
