In depth

Verdict

A competitive opener in which Celtic Spa is suggested ahead of mainly Fabrian, Northside Lodge and War Owl. Having won over a mile here in July from a two-pounds lower mark, Celtic Spa caught the eye making late headway at Sandown last time, suggesting that a step up in trip might suit today. That could well prove the case. That said, game Leicester winner in a similar event, Northside Lodge, and Fabrian, who looks competitively weighted and goes well for his rider, will prove no push-overs. Of the others, War Owl is three pounds below a winning mark from last summer and Jacaranda is closely weighted with Northside Lodge on the basis of the Leicester race referred to. Finally, Villaricca is a lightly-raced Sir Michael Stoute runner that will probably appreciate a drop in trip from 12 furlongs last time. You could make a case for one or two others but, overall, we are happy to side with Celtic Spa.
